We are trying to determine if any of the episodes filmed in Las Vegas have survived.Ĭonsidered to be a "lost" film, all that remains of this one are a few still pictures in Special Collections, Lied Library, Univ of Las Vegas, Nevada. Most of the 101 episodes from this serial are considered "lost" films. Three episodes were filmed in downtown Las Vegas and the Union Pacific Railyards in the winter and spring of 1915. Helen was a tougher gal than Pauline and a great deal spunkier. The Hazards of Helen was a silent serial about a tough cookie gal (initially played by Helen Holmes ) and directed by her husband, JP McGowan. However, filmmakers loved the diverse scenery of Southern Nevada and it became a favorite location for many studios and directors. Many silent classics, such as John Ford's The Iron Horse and James Cruze's The Covered Wagon were shot up in the Reno/Tahoe area where it was easier to transport and house the casts and crews and, in the summer, the weather was much more forgiving than further south in Clark County. Dramas, potboilers, westerns, comedies and even an Oscar winner or two have been filmed there. From the earliest days of silent films, Las Vegas and Clark County have provided the scenic backdrop for movies.
